Why do our children kill?

Maybe it’s because they don’t have anything better to do. Many of the parks and recreation areas that would normally host baseball leagues and other activities to keep our thirteen year olds occupied are still trashed after having been used for trailer parks. Of course the city and FEMA are still haggling over who should pay to clean and restore these recreation areas.

From T.P.

The park sits idle because of protracted negotiations between the city and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Citywide, none of the 15 parks used for FEMA trailers have been returned to service. Instead, the parks stand empty, surrounded by fences draped with raggedy green fabric, topped with crushed stone and crisscrossed by electric lines and white PVC sewer pipes. Metal thieves have nabbed many of the electric boxes, neighbors say. Other than that, nothing’s been touched.

So the next time you hear about a thirteen year old being arrested or murdered, lets put the responsibility on the heads of the people who are responsible for it. FEMA and the government of the City of New Orleans. They only think of themselves, I guess they have forgotten that their primary purpose is to serve the people. Maybe they can come up with a solution when they have their next power lunch at Commanders.

How about the next time we hear of a thirteen year old being arrested or murdered ….we ask where are the parents. I don’t think we should put ALL of the blame on FEMA and the City of New Orleans.

You are right that the parents are part of the problem too. The fact is that the same lack of opportunity that the parents grew up with now affects the current generation. Without opportunity and positive role models which is what NORD used to provide are no longer there. The parents are a lost generation, we need to provide opportunities to this generation to break out of the pattern of violence. Restoring recreational areas is just one piece of the puzzle but it is a very important one so I continue to hold government in contempt for not prioritizing the repair of recreation areas.

I am not sure I agree with you, totally. The opportunities (to some extent) have always been there. Whether people choose to use them or not is another story. I do think that recreation areas do need to be repaired, but there are many other repairs that need to be done, also. Do we hold the govenment in contempt for everything? When do we take on some of the responsibilty of raising our children, ourselves…and being positive role models ourselves.
