Last night the NOPD and the United States Marshalls caught the accused Mother’s Day shooter. Not only did they catch their primary suspect but they have also arrested five others in connection with the case. As the story unfolds it would seem like we have seen this kind of thing before. The shooters are part of a dangerous drug gang and were seeking revenge on someone who was near or in the parade. I am sure more details will be disclosed in the next few days. I’m not sure why they feel they have to take revenge in broad daylight with innocent people including children are in the crowd. Not many New Orleanians have a problem with thug on thug crime, unfortunately the thugs in this town feel they have to open fire into the middle of a crowd, generally hitting everyone except the person they are after. There is one story that really brings the idiocy to light. Ka’Nard Allen a ten year old boy, Last October his father was murdered by his stepmother. In May of 2012 at his tenth Birthday party his cousin Briana Allen was killed and he was shot in the neck inn another gang bang shooting. His Cheek was grazed by a bullet during the Mother’s day shooting.

Some of us live in safer parts of the city. While anything can happen anywhere I don’t live in the environment where ten year olds get shot multiple times in a year or five year old girls are murdered. Akein Scott the suspect in this case is a known criminal, like so many known dangerous criminals in this community he was not in prison. Unless the evil ones are kept off the street kids like Ka’Nard don’t have a chance.

The national news media picked up on the Second line shooting incident in New Orleans further battering our reputation as an unsafe city. I can’t argue with the perception for some of the citizens here it truly is an unsafe city. For others including myself not as bad. With nineteen victims, thankfully it looks as if are going to survive, it was not a safe city on Mother’s day. Witnesses have identified a suspect and the police are searching for him now. I would say he will be caught sooner than later. The positive aspect of this is that witnesses have come forward to identify the perpetrator of what could be called an act of domestic terrorism. We will have to discover the shooter’s motive before we can actually call it that. The rally yesterday at the site of the shooting included the Mayor with all the City council persons in attendance, again raised the cry that the community has to come together to stop the violence. The community has come together to give information to the police and there are a lot of neighborhoods that are fighting crime by just being good neighbors. Stopping the violence before it has occurred is a little more difficult. Discovering the root cause of these children choosing evil over a decent life baffles me.

Mothers Day 7th ward

Mother’s day, a day to celebrate and appreciate all that those special women referred to as Mother. In New Orleans we have a special way of celebrating events called a second line. In this case the second lie was put on by the Original Big 7 Social Aid and Pleasure Club Inc. Social and Pleasure clubs have a long history in New Orleans and are considered part of our culture here that we love to protect and defend. The big 7′s second line yesterday became a victim of what is becoming a new cultural activity, random shootings. Maybe not so random but there is no motive yet in the shooting into a crowd of second liners as they celebrated yesterday. Nineteen people are reported injured, no fatalities thank god. I differ with the police chief and his characterization that this is an unusual event in the city.

“Obviously, this is an unusual circumstance,” Serpas said. “We have second lines that occur in this city virtually every week at this time of the year.”

If called to I will research all of the shooting that occur at second lines, parades, Bourbon street, where shots are fired into crowds of celebrating New Orleanians and tourist. Again we hear the outcry, “this must stop” the mayor asking the people of the city to rally against crime. That’s what is always called for after these events, but nothing changes. I’m sure when they catch the shooters, if they catch the shooters, they will turn out to be young and probably are not unknown to the criminal justice system. I don’t have the answers, and I have thought and blogged about this problem for years. If we can’t stop it, we suffer through it. The only thing I want to know from one of these shooters is why.

Mother’s Day Uptown

Uptown the scene was peaceful as the Audubon Zoo had their Mother’s Day celebration at the zoo. This event has gained a lot of popularity over the years. I could hear Irma Thomas from my back yard as she performed at the event. Ironic that the people attending this event surrounded by Lions, Tigers, Bears and Alligators were safer than those in the seventh ward surrounded by human beings.

Mother’s day at home

Since my mother passed away a few years ago Mother’s day is always a reflective time for me. My mom was a very strong, kind and popular lady. I always find that out when I post a photo and comment about her on Facebook every Mother’s Day. She taught her children well, not only to be self sufficient in life but also to be free thinkers. To form our own opinions, to live our lives the way we wanted to and not be a lemming who follows a crowd. I miss her very much along with a lot of other people.

I love it because it is not read by a lot of people. A few of my friends give it a peek sometimes, occasionally clever tagging get’s a few readers. I love it because it is very personal to me. Unlike Facebook where I have a slew of faux friends people who read my posts here have to make a little effort to read. That is why I can share feelings of disappointment, sadness, and anger that I’m not willing to share with “social media”. I say this because lately I have had a lot of disappointment, and sadness and some anger. I have a good job for paying the bills and the rent but I get less and less personal satisfaction out of it every day. My personal life is pretty bleak these days, can’t blame anyone but myself for that. I pick the people that I associate with, and now have a nice collection of people in my life who really aren’t friends. They like to hang out but I can’t count on them when I am in need. Again I don’t blame them I blame myself for choosing such shallow people to be a part of my life.

On a positive note thing are looking up, in the not too distant future my career may take a turn that leads to more job satisfaction. As far as personal relationships I can rekindle old close relationships I have had in the past and am probably capable of making new ones that matter.

GOd I hope nobody reads this. I’m laughing as I type that, I won’t use ‘LOL’ after all this is my blog not Facebook.
