Kinks in Jindal’s armour

Monday, June 30th, 2008

The resignation of Tommy Johnson, the Governor’s legilative director would indicate that all is not well in Baton Rouge.

From TP:

Gov. Bobby Jindal’s legislative director has resigned after serving fewer than six months with the new administration, which is embroiled in a controversy over the Legislature’s large pay raise.

I think the Governor thought that he could pull a Pontious Pilot on the legislative pay raise issue and wash his hands of the whole thing. It doesn’t look like this issue of excessive pay raises for legislators is going away. The people are mad, and they aren’t willing to let go of it for now. Recall petitions for legislators and even one to recall the Governor himself are floating around out there. Is this the most important issue that our State Government should be addressing? No it’s not and maybe that is part of the problem. The perception seems to be that the leaders of a state that lags behind most other states in just about every category are a little arrogant to give themselves a large raise while Rome is burning. As far as this being an issue that moves the poeple of the State of Louisiana to action, I say any issue that gets the citizens interested in what is going on in Baton Rouge is a good thing. Far too often we sit on the sidelines and let things fall where they may.
